Favorite Animated Shorts

I remember, once as a kid, I read somewhere that roughly only 20% of world's consumption of ice-cream is eaten by children. It came as a shock surprise to me: why on Earth would adults eat ice-cream that much, it's children's food?! Growing up, the realization of the obvious was inevitable. Of course we love ice-cream and are not giving it up! There is a number of things that are reserved for children, or maybe more appropriate for them, but I decide that age has nothing to do with them. One of these is cartoons and animated videos. From time to time I really wish for a Disney marathon - and nothing anyone says will persuade me I'm too old for that! Luckily, in the past decade or so people making animated movies realized that adults are a big part of their audience, so turned to making stuff that is appealing to them as well. Not that I'm saying The Lion King isn't, but, you know.

One of the popular forms of animated videos are animated shorts. I love watching them, as they're telling the idea, the story, in only a few minutes. And they're mostly beautifully made. Today I'm sharing with you my selection of six lovely animated shorts. Sit back and enjoy! 

Home Sweet Home is a touching and gentle story drawn so beautifully that the photography is to die for. The short is about two houses that leave their base and set off on a journey into the unknown. A beautiful story on traveling, friendship and... well, you'll have to see it for yourself, no spoilers. It was also named Best Animated Short at the SIGGRAPH 2014 Computer Animation Festival, and apparently SIGGRAPH is a big thing. So yay!

Invention of Love is a beautiful love story by the author Andrey Shushkov, but hold on, check it out even if 'a love story' doesn't sound like something you would naturally like! It is told in a world of nuts and bolts, and has a really simple storyline - but a very touching one, too. There's no dialogue, but you can get totally immersed in it. I read a comment saying this is to be watched if you're in the mood for both beauty and tragedy. Agreed!

Cupido is about Cupid having a bad day. It was produced as a student film at ESMA School of Arts specializing in animation and special effects located in Montpellier, France. Way to go, students!

Here comes the Academy Award nominee (in 2009), and it's actually the first short by its author, Fabrice O. Joubert. French Toast is about a businessman having a coffee in a fancy Parisian café - who then discovers he forgot to bring his wallet. How does he handle the situation, and does he at all? Check it out in the video.

This one made me laugh! A Brain Divided is an animated short about a man on a blind date and a conflict he finds himself in the middle of. What could it be? Well, it's the left and right side of his brain fighting to win the lady's affection. (So if you suck at dates, this could be why! Haha :))

The last movie was actually the idea behind this blog post. The moment I saw it I wanted to share it with the world. Destino is an animated short released in 2003 by The Walt Disney Company - but it began its life in 1945, as a collaboration between Walt Disney and Salvador Dalí. Yep, the painter! If you've ever seen works by Dalí, you will definitely recognize his style in the short. This was also nominated for Academy Award, and was showed at a number of Dalí exhibitions. As of 2012, the film is featured in the "Dalí" exhibition at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.
